Well, it's been a while since I wrote a journal entry LOL. BLECCH PART DUH is finished and will be available soon from IndyPlanet. I premiered a special edition at InterventionCon

interventioncon.com

--where I also gave a very successful panel on traditional inking--and will be incorporating a few small corrections before I sell the regular edition at AnimeUSA. I also took some great photos of cosplayers, other artists, LARPers, friends, Jesus and a rainbow which can be seen on my Flickr pages

flic.kr/s/aHsjCeqRHf

The other big news is that I am but pages away from the finish of the storyboards to Volume 1 of my baby and one true love HANAKO-SAN. I will update this journal with the exact date (probably tomorrow or the day after). HS is looking like she (yes, the book is a "she") will be going for three volumes, which I will try to finish storyboarding by late spring of 2013 so I can get on to the pencils. I am probably going to have to develop a more intimate inking style for this girl since there is so much going on in the interior of the various characters besides the actual yurei revenge plot. I'll keep posting more teasers in pencil and will start experimenting with the inking style--comments will be appreciated!

Yoko Kanno composed a very touching song to comfort and give hope to the Japanese people during this terrible time and uploaded it to YouTube without any accompanying video. I've added a small video that I hope is in tune with it (although not of the same caibre).

Here's the link to it on my blog Intravenous Caffeine, where I discuss the background ivcaffeine.com/2011/03/14/1564…

And here's the video alone on YouTube www.youtube.com/watch?v=na60p1…

Links to charities are included in both places.

RavenCon—Richmond’s anime-, cosplay- and gamer-friendly science fiction and fantasy convention—will return to the Crowne Plaza West, 6531 West Broad Street, Richmond, VA 23230, April 24-26.  The convention features an art show and five tracks of continuous programming, including art. anime, web comics and costuming, and round-the-clock gaming.

Cosplayers and costumers have an additional reason to attend—they might find themselves in a movie.  Producers Sera Tabb and Jon Headlee will be at RavenCon shooting footage of costumed fans for Identity: Richmond, their documentary on Richmond’s culture, sub-cultures and counter-cultures.  This is in addition to RavenCon’s cosplay-friendly costuming track and Masquerade.

The con’s guests of honor will be Jack McDevitt (writing), Alan F. Beck (art) and R.K. Milholland (webcomics).  To celebrate Edgar Allan Poe’s 200th birthday, there will also be special Poe-themed programming.

More information can be found on the RavenCon web site <www.ravencon.com>.

Have finished my edits of cosplay photos I shot at Katsucon 15, Feb. 13-15, 2009, Arlington VA and they may be found on my Flickr account. Comments, especially identifying cosplayers/costumes, are HIGHLY desired. I only posted smaller versions there, please note me which ones you think I should post here at full size :)

Note: all pics have been photoshopped to balance contrast/brightness/color and correct perspective and lens distortion (barrel and pincushion distortion). Only one is a small "manipulation" per so, where I augmented a lens flare to make it a more interesting shot.

Would you believe someone tried to scam me on the ivcaffeine.com domain name?

Yup that's right, someone in the UK claiming to be a film production company claimed they had the right to ivcaffeine.com, in spite of the fact that they hadn't registered it. They claimed to have been operating several years (and hadn't bothered to register it in that time), had projects going in the UK and USA (none of which I could find on the web) and had several other domain names showing that they OWNED ivcaffeine.com (all of which had been registered the date of the email). Not to mention that no one actually signed the email nor could I find any listing for their production company in the UK phone directories. So I sent their email to my old roommate who is also my lawyer. Screw 'em.

In the meantime, I'm going to the NY COMICOM Feb. 5-8. Anyone else going to be there? I'd love to meet up with fellow deviants, hang out, do dinner, whatever. Send me a note if you're gonna be there

NEW WEBSITE! Starts JANUARY 20, 2009

Mon Dec 15, 2008, 11:47 PM
Now that the Emperor Dubyus is ummm dusting off his shoes and taking to heel...

It's time to change the name of my political cartoon website and give it a new URL:

INTRAVENOUS CAFFEINE ivcaffeine.com
Totally Unfair and Completely Unbalanced

Hopefully, I won't have TOO much politics to complain about :D but you never know. In any case, I intend to expand the scope of the comic to more social and cultural commentary. This is just an excuse to draw the celebutante of the season when she gets out of a car drunk and  pantie-less...with a censored sticker so Google doesn't try to declare me adults-only again. The website is already online, empty (but jiggly and full of juice--is it Probing Day yet?) but with the logo and layout in place, eagerly awaiting idiocy to be chronicled. Bad Greggy

I slipped down the rabbit hole again as my website wasn't getting any play on any search engines (only to find out my designer never took off its privacy settings grrrrrrrrrr) and I did a bad bad thing. I promised a feature to Omnisetsu :iconomnisetsu:, a really great artist, for capturing my 15K and then never got around to actually delivering on the same. MEA CULPA. I can only explain that depression causes me to go into a shell and not accomplish ANYTHING, mostly to my own detriment. Anyway, with apologies to Omnisetsu, here are 4 of his works that deserve your notice.

Glarrrggggghhhhhh!

Sorry if I haven't been commenting on any pics or going into chat or even doing any new deviations. Been getting very rundown with re-starting my website and just as the Memorial Day weekend arrived, I managed to swallow something that went down the wrong pipe. I applied the self-Heimlich maneuver, but while I coughed out most of the obstruction, some stayed where it was and some went up the back entrance of the nose. Result: Sinus infection and sore throat followed by aspirative bronchitis...been on antibiotics since last Tuesday and I'm not what I'd consider 90% better yet...maybe 75. Anyway, I have over 400 pics on my watchlist and I'm gonna hafta give most of them just cursory looks so I can get going with the rest of my inbox :)

HAIL DUBYUS LIVES AGAIN

Sun Feb 24, 2008, 1:45 AM
Rebirth of the Greatest Political Cartoon Run By Squirrels

Yes, HAIL DUBYUS is back and finally housed on its own URL, haildubyus.com www.haildubyus.com. The archives are kind of a mess right now, but after 6 months of time out, I can't wait to get back into the swing of things. Right now I want some feedback--how many days a week should I do it? 5/6 days is definitely out of the question. I HAD been doing 3, but even that left me precious little time for any promotion or doing other stuff, like real life. So my old roomie suggested I only post twice a week. On the other hand, three times weekly IS one of the standard political cartoon runs and if I want to get syndicated in some fashion, I'd better fit into a standard run. Any thoughts? In any case, check it out. www.haildubyus.com and THX

Hi :) I do a political cartoon as a blog called HAIL DUBYUS! blogs.salon.com/0002786 and www.haildubyus.com and have been running it for almost 4 years. I'd been slowly building up a following and my hit counts were rising over the first 2-1/2 years when early last year they took a nosedive. I didn't know what was happening and for about 2 months was searching for a reason. I finally noticed that while most of my nearly 500 cartoons were available on Google Image Search without filtering, WITH filtering there were only a handful. What few people know is that Google Image Search applies moderate filtering in its DEFAULT setting. Although 98% of my cartoons are what could be called G-rated, none were X-rated, yet someone had decided to restrict me to an Adults-only status. I complained and MOST of the restricted cartoons were returned to availability. That lasted for a few months.

The next thing that happened was my hits nosedived again and I discovered that all but 39 of my cartoons were available across the board. Strangely enough, all were still available in China where Google had to agree to censorship in order to reach the Chinese market. It seemed obvious that somehow, the US (and the rest of the world) access to my cartoons had been mixed up with Chinese access and I pointed this out to the Image Search team. Surprise surprise, in two weeks, both the Chinese and US image searches could find only 39 images. I wrote, and I wrote, and no one answered. Finally I tried a letter to each member of the board of directors.

Only one of them took an interest, a revered Internet pioneer who shall remain nameless. He said he would investigate. A month went by and I heard nothing so I wrote again and his reply seemed to indicate he'd never heard of me before. I reminded him of the situation, he went to check it out with his people and wrote back to tell me there was no censorship going on because GOOGLE DOESN'T CENSOR. Well, besides being tautological and circular reasoning, it didn't seem to have anything to do with my situation and I told him so and he went back to his people and they told him it was something I was doing wrong. Well, I hadn't changed anything so I had no idea what I could be doing wrong and he went back to his people and they told him that they were working on including more images into Image Search and if I'd be patient, yadda yadda. In other words, they were giving me (and him) the brush-off.

I thanked him and said I'd keep an eye on the situation. I discovered a Google Search command "allinurl:" which could tell you just how many images were in the Google database. It seems that there were over 300 images--way down from the nearly 500 I'd started out with--it was just that no one could find them. Then I hit another nosedive and I checked "allinurl:" again and discovered my presence in the database had dropped to 89.

While I appreciate that our internet pioneer truly wanted to believe that Google is not evil and is not censoring, he's wrong. Someone at Google Image Search is suppressing my images. The only thing that keeps it from being called censorship is that he or she has left a handful of way out-of-date cartoons to cover his/her tracks. I don't believe I am the only website targeted, but I'm definitely the major website that is important to ME.

My cartoons are considered pretty left wing. Actually they're not, they just are against the lies, corruption and incompetence of the present administration. But to many people, that would make them unpatriotic. Either complaints about my cartoons have been delivered to Google and some incompetent at Image Search has been eliminating them without investigating whether or not they were inappropriate, or there's someone at Image Search who is actively suppressing critical content. Like I said, I don't believe this suppression is directed mainly at me. I believe it's directed at a lot of other sites as well. I'm just one of a few thousand that are in the kill zone. And I do mean kill zone--look at what happened to Live Journal just recently...

So that's why I'm now a proud member of the dA community. I've come here to advertise my site and my talents. I'll be using this to reprint some of my best work from HAIL DUBYUS! in high quality images and I'll also be producing new material that has nothing to do with politics which I've been itching to get done. Please check out my original website if you get a chance, I'll appreciate it.
